An in-person event at the Alper JCC

Book Summary: In 1937 Bombay, renowned Jewish-Indian painter Mira Novak bonds with her Indian-British nurse, Sona Falstaff, when they meet while Mira is recovering from a miscarriage in the hospital. Within six days, Mira dies unexpectedly and under mysterious circumstances.

The painter leaves three paintings and a cryptic note for Sona, instructing the nurse to deliver them to Mira's former lovers in Prague, Florence, and Paris - where active resistance movements against Nazis and Fascists mirror India's independence movement against British rule. Sona's perilous quest evolves into a poignant journey of hard truths, lies of omission, and self-discovery - as well as the painful answer about how Mira Novak died.

 Fine, I'm a Terrible Person

An in-person event at the Alper JCC

Book Summary: This funny, tender mother-daughter caper story stars 73-year-old Aurora, a broke, eccentric former beauty living in wealthy Marin County. When she learns her father's widow has died, she heads to LA, hoping for an inheritance. Meanwhile, her 43-year-old daughter Leyla, who is high-strung and spends her days pursuing perfection while attempting to keep up with the other Marin Uber moms, suspects her husband is cheating and secretly follows him to a cannabis conference, also in LA.

Their separate missions collide over one chaotic weekend, staying with quirky Sephardic cousins who speak in Ladino proverbs and cook endlessly. Amid laughter, mishaps, and old-country wisdom, Aurora and Leyla find transformation, connection, and a touch of healing.
