School Field Trips

From Rachel Kohrman Ramos’s 1st grade field trip (to last exhibit):
“We so enjoyed our field trip. As a teacher, this field trip is designed to make my experience and that of the students convenient, well-organized and controlled, so that the emphasis is on learning and fun, not solely on student behavior management. The students’ exposure to art, music, hands-on activities and even sports was wonderful and gave students of all academic levels ways to access the material.”

Grossman Family Donates
Art For Museum

What’s more fun than a clown and a merry-go-round horse? We are thrilled that Richard and Joyce Grossman have donated these two fabulous papier maché works to our very own Lisa Ann Watson Children’s Discovery Museum. The pieces were created by Mel Bloom, husband of Joyce's mother.

How do children in other cultures play games? This colorful, hands-on exhibit invites kids of all ages to explore and play games from around the world and across the centuries, and features games from Africa, India, China and England. The focal point is an oversized chessboard with giant chess pieces; there is also a House of Cards, and a unique library with over 50 popular contemporary board games that challenge strategy, math, luck and physical coordination. Game playing teaches children cooperation, builds skills and improves knowledge all while they are having fun. The games, accompanying graphics and labels are in both English and Spanish.

The featured games include:

-Nine Men’s Morris
-Checkers, France or Spain, called Draughts
-Chess, China, India or Persia, around 400
-Tic-Tac-Toe, Egypt, 1500 BCE
-Pig-in-a-Pen
-Sequence
-Boc-Tin, China
-Dominoes, China, 1500s
-Mancala, Africa, around 1400 BCE
-Skittles, England

-Table Ice Hockey
-Hopscotch
-Senet, Egypt, from 3500 BCE
