Playing Together: Games

How do children in other cultures play games? This colorful, hands-on exhibit invites kids of all ages to explore and play games from around the world and across the centuries, and features games from Africa, India, China and England. The focal point is an oversized chessboard with giant chess pieces; there is also a House of Cards, and a unique library with over 50 popular contemporary board games that challenge strategy, math, luck and physical coordination. Game playing teaches children cooperation, builds skills and improves knowledge all while they are having fun. The games, accompanying graphics and labels are in both English and Spanish.
The featured games include:
-Nine Men’s Morris -Checkers, France or Spain, called Draughts -Chess, China, India or Persia, around 400 -Tic-Tac-Toe, Egypt, 1500 BCE -Pig-in-a-Pen -Sequence -Boc-Tin, China -Dominoes, China, 1500s -Mancala, Africa, around 1400 BCE -Skittles, England -Dutch Shuffleboard -Table Ice Hockey -Hopscotch -Senet, Egypt, from 3500 BCE
