Pictures of Resistance: The Wartime
Photography of Jewish Partisan Faye Schulman

Opens October 10
In Gallery through November 28

Born in Poland in 1924, Faye Schulman received her first camera from her brother when she was 13. It was that camera which ultimately saved her life, and allowed her to later document Jewish partisan activity. Schulman’s rare collection of images captures the camaraderie, horror and loss, bravery and triumph of the rag-tag, tough partisans--some Jewish, some not--who fought the Germans and their collaborators, and also includes an in-depth filmed interview with the photographer. “I want people to know that there was resistance. Jews did not go like sheep to the slaughter. I was a photographer. I have pictures. I have proof.” The exhibit is produced by the Jewish Partisan Educational Foundation (JPEF), and curated by Jill Vexler, Ph. D.; a Teacher/Student Study Guide is available.

Sig Lichterman Sculptures
Opens February 6
In Gallery through March 10

Sig Lichterman learned the basic principles of sculpting - plaster impressions and casts, wax carving, gold casting, soldering, and ceramics - as a New York dentist. After WWII, with formal training at the New School of Social Research and then at SUNY Purchase, he began showing his work across Westchester County in New York State. Several awards and newspaper articles about his sculptures followed, including a mention in People Magazine. Much of his early work is carved from tree stumps or pieces of stones that suggested subject matter based on the object’s form. His later sculptures were inspired by ideas that could easily be expressed in larger shapes. Through his long career, Lichterman’s total body of work shows a progression towards the more abstract.

Elsa Wachs and Linda Dubin Garfield:
Uncompleted Journey: Two Artistic Responses to the Holocaust

Opens May 1
In Gallery through June 19

In honor of Yom Hashoah, this beautiful and haunting photo/collage exhibition commemorates the uncompleted lives taken in the Holocaust. Artist Elsa Wachs created Fallen Leaves, which focuses on ten lost members from the Wachs family tree. The exhibit expresses her need to remember our people’s heritage, knowing that history and personal stories are a community’s memory; they shape our identity and its lessons mold each family’s character. In Behind the Seen/Scene, Linda Dubin Garfield incorporates her present day photographs of Eastern Europe with historical Holocaust photographs. Visiting Budapest, Vienna and Prague made her mourn the losses of World War II in a personal way. In this exhibit, the annihilation of a thriving culture is revealed in her imagery of reality/ illusion, past/present, and history/future generations.
